Brief Story of Jack Daniel Distillery
Jack Daniel's Distillery was founded in 1866 and was the first registered distillery in the United States. Its founder, Jasper Newton Daniel, is the genius behind the renowned Old No. 7. Jack's famed whiskey won a gold medal at the 1904 World's Fair.
The secret to Jack's award-winning flavor is limestone spring water, which is still used in Lynchburg, Tennessee. When citizens in Tennessee hear the word "whiskey," they automatically think of the name Jack Daniel.
This is due to the fact that Jack Daniel's trademark tasting whiskey is associated with southern living.
Jack Daniel's mash is made from corn, rye, and malted barley, and is distilled in copper stills.
It is then filtered through 10-foot stacks of sugar maple charcoal. This filtering step is referred to as "mellowing" by the company. The Lincoln County Process removes impurities and the taste of corn during this extra step.
The company argues this extra step makes the product different from bourbon. This extra step makes the product different from bourbon. However, the North American Free Trade Agreement and Canadian law require Tennessee whiskey to be "a straight Bourbon Whiskey."
Jack Daniel's distinctive aspect of the filtering process is that the brand grinds its charcoal before using it for filtering. After the filtering, The whiskey is stored in newly handcrafted oak barrels, which give it its color and most of its flavor.
The product label specifies that it is a "sour mash" whiskey, which means that some of the wet solids from a previous batch are added to the mash to help the fermentation process run more consistently. This is common practice in American whiskey production.
Many barrels are sent to Scotland to be used in the production of Scotch whisky after being used to age Jack Daniel's whiskey. Some barrels are leased from Glenmorangie distillery. Some of the barrels are sold to the McIlhenny Company of Avery Island, Louisiana, for the production of Tabasco sauce, as well as to the Mount Gay Rum Company of Barbados and the Appleton Estate of Jamaica for the aging process of their distinctively flavored rums.
Some barrels are also cut in half and shipped to Lowe's Home Centers to be used as planter pots. They retain the whiskey smell for some time after arriving there and must be watered every couple of days to keep the wood from shrinking before they are sold.
Why is Jack Daniel a great choice?
Jack Daniel's is easy to drink, it has a pleasant taste. It is reasonably smooth and can be taken neat, with a drop of water or with ice.
Despite its low proof and downer finish, Jack Daniel's is a great value for the whiskey in its bottle and can be a decent sipping whiskey. As a sipping whiskey, it has an above-average nose, a pleasant banana and sugary vanilla palate, but a flaw in the finish.
It's great to chase down with a cold beer. It mixes well so you can drink it long with cola and ice or similar. It's an inoffensive and relatively inexpensive drink and it makes a great introduction to American whiskies.
Fruity sweetness, vanilla custard, oak, and banana combine to make a pleasant combination. It has a medium intensity but still has a good amount of richness. Apricot and corn add another layer of complexity. These aromas combine to create an enjoyable and extremely satisfying start to this whiskey.
A burst of corn and banana hits you first, followed by a sweet vanilla and walnut blend. Minor traces of smoke, cinnamon, and maple infiltrate the dish, adding depth and nuance. Although its thin mouthfeel is disappointing and the 80 proof unappealing, it does drink slightly hotter. This all adds up to a distinctly Jack palate that is surprisingly enjoyable to drink.
