Brief Story of Rotkäppchen Winery
The Rotkäppchen Sparkling Wine Winery has been creating high-quality sparkling wines and sharing moments of pure delight with its customers since 1856. Its seasoned cellar masters transform basic wines into a variety of unique cuvées.
The sparkling wine Rotkäppchen (the German name for the fairy tale heroine Red Riding Hood) is the ultimate success story of an East German brand that has managed to emerge stronger after 125 years of ups and downs. After a low point in 1990, when the fall of the Berlin Wall nearly brought the traditional GDR brand to its knees, Rotkäppchen quickly rebounded to become the most popular East German champagne brand within a few years.
The winery Kloss & Foerster had been in operation for well over 30 years when the word Rotkäppchen first appeared on the label of a champagne bottle in 1894. They had to come up with a new name for their "Monopoly" named sparkling wine in order to comply with the newly enacted trademark regulation. This was not the end of the road for the East German sparkling wine firm. Over time, two world wars and a global economic crisis wreaked havoc. The enterprise was then expropriated in 1948, renamed "VEB Rotkäppchen sparkling wine Freyburg," and turned over to the GDR as public property.
Rotkäppchen's success began to wane almost overnight after years of working in a planned economy. East Germans were tired of their old brands after the fall of the Berlin Wall and turned to western goods in scores. To make matters worse, Rotkäppchen was unknown in West Germany and had to compete against a slew of well-known brands.
Despite some desperate times, when their turnover was halved and they were forced to lay off 75% of its workforce, the company was able to recover after a management buyout. It gradually grew into Germany's leading sparkling wine cellar, which continues to set sales records despite the current sluggish market for sparkling wine. A track record like this doesn't just happen; it's the product of a combination of attributes that are critical to a company's long-term success.
