Brief Story of A. Le Coq Brewery
A. Le Coq is an Estonian brewery and was founded in 1807 by a Prussian family of the same name, who were descendants of the Huguenots who had fled France in the 17th century. Albert von Le Coq moved to London in the 1820s to deal with the goods of his family's wine estate.
Soon after, he began bottling and exporting Russian Imperial Stout under his own brand. He bought that unique dark and powerful top-fermented beer from one of London's large breweries, which bottled it specifically for the Russian market's taste preferences.
The company was bought in 1997 and is currently owned by Finnish company Olvi. A. Le Coq & Co. (Russia) Ltd., which had been converted into a private limited group in 1904, was obliged to relocate its headquarters and bottling factory from London to St. Petersburg due to high customs charges and a growing number of forgeries of the famous trademark.
The proprietors of A. Le Coq searched for a suitable brewery to make Imperial stout in Russia for many years before settling on Tivoli Ltd. in Tartu, where the firm is still functioning today. The name A. Le Coq has changed hands many times over the last 200 years, but the trademark has remained the same.
During the Soviet era, the company was known as Tartu Õlletehas or Tartu Brewery, but when it was privatized by Olvi in 1997, it was renamed A. Le Coq. Since then, the A. Le Coq brand has been reintroduced, and significant investments have helped the company and its trademark become one of Estonia's most well-known and well-known brands.
