Brief Story of Glenfarclas Distillery
Evidence suggests that the distillery first opened its doors before 1791. Robert Hay, who ran the distillery at the time received the first license in 1836. It was purchased by John Grant on June 8, 1865 and is currently owned and operated by his heirs making it truly independent. George G. Grant, John Grant's son, was assigned to supervise the activities at Glenfarclas.
When George G. Grant died in 1890, his wife Elsie took over the distillery's license. Elsie passed active control of the distillery to her sons John and George at some point in the following years. In August 1896, during the height of the whisky boom, the Grants formed a partnership with Pattisons Ltd. Following the crash, the Grants reclaimed full ownership of the distillery. In 1913, John retired owing to ill health, and George took over as sole proprietor.
Glenfarclas became a private limited company in 1947, owned by George S. Grant and John P. Grant, George's sons. The current Chairman is John L.S. Grant, who joined Glenfarclas in 1973. George S. Grant, his son, is the Director of Sales. In 2006, Whisky Magazine named the company Distiller of the Year. Glenfarclas has been sold in the United Kingdom by Pol Roger Ltd since 2006.
The Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase at Cheltenham was the company's first horserace sponsorship in 2008. In the 17th Annual Malt Advocate Whisky Awards in 2011, the 40-year-old 46% vol. expression was selected "Scotch Whisky Single Malt of the Year."

Let's start with the Glenfarclas 40 year old, which is one of their greatest and most highly rated products. The distillery's primary range of age statement whiskies culminates with the 40 year old. Rather than being a collector's item with unnecessarily ornate packaging and flashy branding, it's still very much a sipping whisky, unlike many new longer-aged bottlings.
Glenfarclas 40 year old is simply outstanding and ranks among the top whiskies in the world. The fruitier aromas combine nicely with the venerable sherry and spice wood qualities for a wine that is stunningly balanced while still being exceedingly vibrant.
Next is Glenfarclas 30 years old. It has aromas of green apple/lemon sherbet tartness, pine wood overtones, and orange peels at first. Christmas cake with fruit. There's a whiff of cognac. Eucalyptus. Later, nectarines, currants, and almonds were added. It has a shaky start but gradually improves.
Bursts of berries and oranges, greengages, tinned peaches, with a slightly sour undertone of aged wood. Fruit tea with honey drizzled on top. Apple that has been dried. Late malty aromas give way to vanilla latte and spices such as cinnamon and ginger. This is a delicate, slightly shy whisky with a strong feeling of age and freshness.
Overall, Glenfarclas can offer you a products that has a long and strong finish but still warm and welcoming. This is a top shelf worthy whisky and one of the best you'll ever taste.
