Brief Story of Rémy Martin Cognac
Rémy Martin is a cognac-producing and selling company based in France. It is one of the largest cognac producers and is also a member of the Comité Colbert, an association dedicated to "promoting the concept of luxury." It was founded in 1724 and is based in the commune of Cognac. Cognac Fine Champagne is the brand's specialty.
Rémy Martin is named after the company's founder, who was born in 1695 near Rouillac in southwestern France. He was a winegrower by trade when he founded a cognac trading house in 1724. Rémy's grandson, also named Rémy, continued the business after his death in 1773. Paul-Emile-Rémy Martin took over the company in 1841 and saw it grow rapidly.
On the bottles and cases, he added a logo in the shape of a centaur, a mythological creature that represents Sagittarius, Martin's zodiac sign. The centaur logo is distinctive to the Rémy Martin brand, which is also known in China as réntóumă, which means "man-headed horse."
André Renaud, a trained lawyer and merchant who had been a partner in E. Rémy Martin & Co. since 1910, took the reins during the interwar period and launched the first VSOP Fine Champagne in 1927. The cognacs of Rémy Martin were then sold all over the world. After WWII, André Hériard-Dubreuil, André Renaud's son-in-law, continued to grow Rémy Martin.
André Hériard-Dubreuil took over as president after André Renaud died in 1965. His children gradually joined him, including Dominique Hériard-Dubreuil, who rose through the ranks to become general manager in 1988 and president two years later. Rémy Cointreau was added to the House of Rémy Martin family group in 1991.
