Brief Story of Tullamore Distillery
Tullamore D.E.W. dates back to 1829, when Michael Molloy founded a distillery in Tullamore. Tullamore Dew, also known as Tullamore D.E.W. (due to the dots being de-emphasized with color and text size in most branding), is an Irish whiskey created by William Grant & Sons. It is the world's second-largest selling Irish whiskey brand, with annual sales of approximately 1,500,000 cases as of 2020.
The whiskey was first made in Tullamore, County Offaly, Ireland, in the old Tullamore Distillery, which opened in 1829. Its name is taken from the initials of Daniel E. Williams (D.E.W. ), the first distillery's general manager and later proprietor. The original distillery collapsed in 1954, and with whiskey supplies running low, the brand was sold to another Irish distiller, John Powers & Son, in the 1960s, and production was shifted to the Midleton Distillery in County Cork in the 1970s, following a merger of three major Irish distilleries.
William Grant & Sons bought the brand in 2010, and built a new distillery on the outskirts of Tullamore. The new distillery debuted in 2014, bringing whiskey production back to the area after a sixty-year hiatus.
A visitor centre was opened in 2012 in a restored bonded warehouse that used to be part of the old distillery. The centre offers guided tours and tastings that last anywhere from 50 minutes to 5 hours.

Let’s start with Tullamore Dew Original, the nose is suprisingly nice for the cost. The fruit strikes you right away, and it's tastier than a lot of fruit at this price point. On the nose, there's a hint of green apple and light oak, while on the palate, vanilla and apple combine to create an almost caramel apple flavor. The finish is brief, with a bitter oak flavor that partially stops the caramel apple delight, but after the bitterness goes, you're left with a peppermint-like sensation on the corners of your tongue. This is a delicious, easy-to-drink beverage!
Next is Tullamore D.E.W. 12 Year OldIt has a spicy flavor with a rich yet creamy mouthfeel and a distinct chocolatey aroma. Chocolate is accompanied by dried fruits and nuts, giving this whiskey a praline note. This product is best enjoy neat!
Overall, Tullamore Dew is a great whisky for sipping. It's smooth and delicious. It doesn't have the same smoky or spicy flavor as many other smoky or spicy whiskeys. The malty flavor and mild woodiness provide complexity, but they don't overpower the beer. A very fine aged whiskey with great complexity!
