Brief Story of Cragganmore Distillery

Cragganmore was the first distillery in Scotland to be built on a site specifically chosen and built to take advantage of its proximity to the Strathspey Railway. Cragganmore was founded in 1869 by John Smith, who had previously worked at the Macallan, Glenlivet, and Glenfarclas distilleries.

The site was chosen by Smith both for its proximity to the waters of the Craggan burn and because it was close to the Strathspey Railway. The Strathspey Railway is now disused and forms the Speyside Way long-distance walking route. Cragganmore is one of the most productive distilleries in the Banffshire region of Speyside, where it is located.

Cragganmore is known for being the most complex single malt in the Strathspey region. Cragganmore was marketed by United Distillers under their Classic Malts brand. United Distillers has since become a part of Diageo.

Let's start with Cragganmore 12 years old. Cragganmore 12 Year Old is adored for its smoky, sweet, honey, and orange zest flavor notes, which are carefully distilled at Cragganmore. It is very light yet well balanced, sweet and nutty at the front and finishes with a smoky tail. You will surely love the floral and gentleness of this malt. 

Next is Cragganmore 25 years old. This 25 year old was distilled in 1988 and aged in a mix of refill European and American Oak casks. On the nose, the Cragganmore 25 is malty at first, but after a while, it opens up to reveal floral notes, dried fruit, nuts, and possibly a hint of orange peel. It's pleasant for a while, but a touch of raw, pungent alcohol character threatens to overwhelm it. The body follows the same pattern, beginning with dense grains and chewy malt. Baked apple notes, more raisin notes, and fresh citrus notes on the finish round out the palate. 

There's an alcoholic undercurrent here now and then, but a little water helps to balance things out, revealing a nice vanilla caramel flavor in the process. The simplest way to enjoy your whisky is neat, cleansing your palate with cool water between sips. 

Overall, Cragganmore can offer a complex fruity, toffeed taste, as it is primarily made from refill sherry casks. Since 1987, it has been the Speyside representation in Diageo's Classic Malts line.
